My diabetes story: Jenny

19 November 2019

Meet Jenny

I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1976.

This was before blood glucose meters, before insulin pumps, before CGM, and before carb counting was considered standard practice.

In fact, one of the first books I had that discussed treating diabetes talked about using glass syringes rather than the plastic disposable ones and to ensure that your syrings were sterile when you used them, the book recommended that you take the syringes and place them in boiling water between uses.

When I was diagnosed, my family was supportive.

My parents never let me see diabetes as a hinderance or to really use it as an excuse not to do something.

I grew up believing I could do anything I wanted to and to become anything that I wanted to become.

So, we fast forward to today.

I am happily married, and my husband has never known me without diabetes.

When we get ready for dinner, we have a routine where he feeds the pets while I check my blood sugar and then when we're done with that, we sit down and have dinner.

I also have a very supportive work family. It is really great to have that support, not only at home, but to know that you can count on your work family to look out for you as well.
