My diabetes story: Carol

15 November 2019

Meet Carol

This October will mark 27 years since I was diagnosed with diabetes.

I feel fortunate to reach each milestone at the 5, 10, 15, 20 and now beyond, with no long term complications.

I remember after hearing my diagnosis, giving myself a little bit of a pep talk.

You’re stronger than you think you are. You can do more than you think you can.

I’d love to tell you that it’s all smooth sailing but that would be a lie.

It’s easy to get sidetracked. Hey, life gets in the way and sometimes you mess up with your diabetes management.

One night in particular, I was late working in a hotel, a little distracted, picked up the wrong insulin and injected a large amount.

When I pulled out the pen and looked at the color, I freaked out.

I knew at that point I needed help.

Hailed a cab and made my way to the nearest emergency room.

Spent the next 6 hours linked up to an IV and had my blood sugar checked every 15 minutes.

Pretty frightening. When I look back on it now I kinda laugh about it, but at the time, I was without my support system with my family, was on my own, And I was afraid. But I worked through it.

My family has always played a really important role in my management.

Whether it’s getting me involved in a new spin class, or suiting me up in some hockey gear and getting me out there, and face off against my son playing hockey.

Little crazy at the time, but kept the blood sugars at bay.

From a family perspective, I tell my husband and kids, you guys are my extended healthcare assistants.

With no retirement in sight.

And for that I’m blessed to have them with me on this journey.

As a family, we pay attention to all aspects of our life from what we do, what we eat and again, they keep tabs on me on a daily basis.
