Ways diabetes can be managed (video 3)
More time spent in target range can reduce the risk of developing complications. Depending on the diabetes type and the disease progression, this can be achieved in different ways.
Diet – A dietitian can help with optimising to a diet that is optimised for the individual’s health condition.
Exercise – Physical activity makes the cells more receptive to insulin and more energy can be produced.
Oral medication – There is medication for increasing the amount of insulin to limit the amount of sugar entering the bloodstream, and medication that makes the cells more responsive to insulin.
Insulin injections – In the case of Type 1 diabetes insulin injections are necessary, as well as in Type 2 diabetes depending on the progression of the disease. In order to calculate the right amount of insulin needed to cover meals or snacks, counting carbohydrates is necessary. Carbohydrate counting can keep blood glucose levels close to normal.
